Historical significance
Oriskany Falls New York was settled in the late 1790s. The area was then owned by the DeLancy Family, an aggressive, loyalist family. They were donating a church and a local grocery store.
The first mill in Oriskany was a sawmill built by Thomas Cassaty in 1795. The grist mill was constructed by Josiah Bartholomew and Eleazar Metcalf in 1809. The Utica, Clinton and Binghamton Railroad opened in 1872, and Oriskany became its southern terminus.
In the mid-1800s, Oriskany had a bustling mill town. Two livery stables, a woolen mill, two meat markets, a cooperage, a barber shop, and a broom factory were all part of the town. Oriskany was also home to two churches. The First Congregational Free Church is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In the early 1900s, the village suffered from a number of disasters. In 1969, the south side of the main business block was destroyed. The Cross Opera House and the Sargent House were also destroyed.
