History
The Town Park in Clinton, NY has a history that spans over two centuries. The early years of the town were marked by the arrival of many pioneer families from Connecticut. Several of these families settled in the German Flats area in the early 1700s. They found good soil and plentiful forests.
The town became incorporated as the village of Clinton in April of 1843. During this time, it was the center of the town’s growth. It had its own board of trustees, officials, and employees.
In 1793, a Presbyterian missionary named Samuel Kirkland founded the Hamilton-Oneida Academy. It was the third liberal arts college in New York state. It was chartered in 1812 by the Board of Regents.
The first major church in Clinton was the Old White Meeting House. It had a Negro Pew on the east side of the building. It was built in Gothic Revival style.
In the late 19th century, iron ore was discovered in the region and mining was widely conducted. The Franklin Iron Works remained in operation for over sixty years. The last mine was closed in 1963.
